Why the zinc form matters
Zinc is an essential trace element involved in immune function, cellular growth and enzyme activity. In oral supplementation, elemental zinc content alone does not describe the full ingredient: dissolution and interactions with dietary components also matter.
Chelation binds zinc to glycine, creating a defined complex distinct from free ionic zinc. BioZincB’s structure and elemental zinc content are detailed below.
BioZincB is a zinc bisglycinate raw material containing >22% elemental zinc, with a 1:2 zinc-to-glycine ratio in which one zinc ion (Zn²⁺) forms a complex with two glycine molecules.
Within the zinc bisglycinate structure, the amino and carboxylate groups of glycine participate in binding the zinc ion, thereby forming the characteristic chelate structure. The complex formed by two glycine molecules and zinc constitutes a defined structure with physicochemical properties distinct from those of free ionic zinc. Glycine’s low molecular weight also contributes to maintaining a high proportion of elemental zinc within the complex.
Analytically Characterized Structure
The technical evaluation of BioZincB considers not only the amount of elemental zinc but also the structural characteristics of the zinc-glycine complex. FTIR and XRD analyses have therefore been used to characterize the product.
FTIR
Complex formation between zinc and glycine was evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Changes observed in the characteristic bands associated with the amino and carboxylate groups of glycine provide analytical evidence supporting the zinc-glycine interaction and formation of the chelate structure.
XRD
Solid-state and crystalline structural properties were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The resulting diffraction profile demonstrates the crystalline character of BioZincB and provides complementary data for the characterization of the zinc bisglycinate structure.
The combined evaluation of the FTIR and XRD results enables BioZincB to be characterized not only in terms of its composition, but also with respect to the properties of its chelate and solid-state structures.
